What is lughnasadh?
Lughnasadh is the first of the two Pagan harvest festivals, traditionally celebrated around August first. The harvest festivals are times of both joyful abundance and a wary apprehension- as Winter’s survival depends entirely on a successful harvest. This occasion marks the high point of Summer, halfway between the Summer Solstice and the Autumn Equinox, and as with all eight Sabbats in the wheel of the year, it is a wonderful time for grounding, centering, and reflection.
For me, reflection happens best when I take the time to sit with a journal and write out my thoughts, feelings, and memories of the current season.
I invite you to join me in this reflection, using the following prompts to guide your journaling or meditation:
journal prompts for lughnasadh:
- In what areas of your life are you currently experiencing great abundance?
- How have you connected to nature or your environment in this season?
- What relationships have helped you to grow and thrive recently?
- What physical or metaphorical ‘crop’ in your life needs most tending before the season’s end?
- How has your physical and emotional state been affected by the climate?
- In what ways has the Summer been rejuvenating or draining for you?
- How have you begun to fill your stores for the dark half of the year?
- In what ways have you been radiating light unto others?
- How have you practiced accepting and welcoming light unto yourself?
- What moment of Seasonal Joy stands out for you from the first half of the Summer?
I hope that a brief pause to reflect on these questions helps you to ground yourself within the constant passage of time that we all experience. I began consciously utilizing the wheel of the year last Yule to center myself within the seasons, and it’s been a wonderful way to orient myself and my family toward a natural and grounded perspective of time.
May the rest of your Summer be full of abundance, and remember to wish a blessed Lughnasadh to all!
Tell me- how are you celebrating?
